Re: Frippery
I first saw today's word many years ago in a review of an album by an avant-garde guitarist named Robert Fripp, so I could understand it in context but I really thought the word was made up to describe his guitar playing.

Re: Degringolade
My left hip went through degringolade through the spring, requiring me to have it replaced a bit over a month ago. It shouldn't have taken that for me to come back to this site, though. I'll try not to stay away so long anymore.

Re: Disembarrass
I've never seen that word before, but I had a good idea of what it meant right away. I have kind of a working knowledge of Spanish, and in Spanish embarazada means "pregnant," from embarazar "to obstruct or block."

Re: Ukraine
Thanks for this. I wish news sites did this on their own pages. What good does it do me to read about someone whose name is a mystery to me? Some sites have started using native diacritical marks, but without knowing what they mean in that particular language, it's not helpful, at all, at all. Take...

Re: Morganatic
I always wondered where that term came from. I figured someone named Morgan (or something similar) was involved in an early marriage of this type.

Re: Excrescence
I've known a few people with excrescences, though at the time I didn't know what the word was if the growth was bone rather than fluid or a tumor. Actually I've had a few myself, if extra teeth qualify.

Re: Hygge
A new one to me. Without any context, I saw this in my email and immediately I was reminded of an etymology article i read years ago about how onomatopeia played a large part in the formation of many languages, using as an example that an early form of some language (Gaelic, maybe?) an old word for ...

Re: Remission
But the "sending in" of payments is remittance, isn't it? I've never seen remission in any sense except that of a disease that has lessened in severity but not necessarily gone away.

Re: Vaporware
I've always spelled it gonna, but then again I spell spelled spelled, not spelt, which is a kind of grain to me. :? Sometime ago a now-retired co-worker sparked an interesting conversation about spelled vs. spelt . Apparently some younger co-workers were unaware of the grain called spelt . :?

Re: Commode
I remember that when I was a kid it cracked me up to hear my Dad refer to the commode rather than the toilet (or bathroom ). I knew better than to laugh but I thought it sounded funny. I guess my New Yorker sensibility was kicking in; commode seemed like a country/Southern term to my young ears. :oo...

Rather than rehash my old ones, I'll share some new ones. From an old t-shirt: "I KNOW KARATE, JIU-JITSU... and a few other Japanese words."
