Re: SQUELCH
I'm afraid I consider such a sentiment unbecoming, unworthy of you and smacking of rank prejudice Philip. I doubt you have considered the range of musical and lyrical expression that is involved in some of such music though, so perhaps it is understandable. It is not your call to decide on the valid...

Re: GRIDLOCK
Nice exposition indeed MTC. On roundabouts I offer without comment a link to the grandaddy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_Roundabout_(Swindon) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPANKRHL9HU OK, I'll comment - it is regarded by many as the scariest junction in the UK. It's not really that bad though...

Re: SQUELCH
I fully accept anyone's right not to enjoy rap. Most new music has been described as parent tormenting at some point since such things could spread, even boogie-woogie. However it is very wrong headed to not acccept that such music is as high an art as jazz or any other kind, at least in some incarn...

Re: SQUELCH
I appreciate that with senescence comes a reluctance to embrace more recent stylings, but surely anyone with an interest in language might appreciate a musical form such as hip hop which involves plenty of verbal dexterity at a minimum, and some enthralling lingual umbrations at it's best. I say thi...

Re: LADY
Quite MTC. Humphrey Bogart was about the last bloke who might have got away with referring to someone as a lady around these parts. You might get anything between a look from between narrowed lids or full-on round abuse for terming a woman such in the presence of any grown female here. At least in E...

Re: DEMAGOGUE
Ahh, I see Philip, thanks.
And I am definitely going to try and use ultracrepidate in a sentence sometime soon.

Re: DEMAGOGUE
Hi MTC, indeed they do, should they successfully break out of that larval stage. For this to occur they tend to require adequate charisma to persuade others to follow them. Philip, I am not quite sure what you mean. Do you have a clear point you might wish to make? I am sure it might be interesting ...

Re: DEMAGOGUE
Of course a country's leader can be a demagogue, however they can be found in many circumstances - a union leader may appeal to a (valid) sense of injustice to gain popularity or a school PE teacher making fun of weedy pupils for cheap laughs from the gallery are both examples of demagoguery. Politi...

Re: PREDICATE
I predicate the following examples: Sense 1.) Computer programming is predicated on logic. Sense 2.) Democritus predicated a world composed of atoms. Sense 3.) Sentences have a subject and a predicate. Can you make sense of these? Thanks, certainly this makes sense. I guess the verb to predicate ca...

Re: PREDICATE
As a programmer, with some interest in philosophy, I am particularly familiar with this word. I guess I would see it as having a reasonably formal tone. In programming a predicate would normally be seen as a condition under which execution path A would be taken, otherwise execution path B would occu...

Re: LOQUACIOUS
Clearly this is not the forum to wax loquacious on such contentious issues, but I am always interested in people's opinions on such topics and how they have come to pass. For myself I take many more journeys by cycle than by motorised vehicle. It's not much but I accept I cannot affect what others d...

Re: LOQUACIOUS
Most restrained of you Philip! I wouldn't have minded your unedited version or thought less of you for it - even in the UK we know to make allowances for Texans, I would have just been amused.
Would it have perchance contained the mantra 'Drill baby drill!'?

Re: LOQUACIOUS
I vaguely remember Dr Seuss. From the description of the book, it is horrible. I am glad my children didn't read it. I am all for preserving a good environment; but the subject is too complex to discuss, placing blame, in a children's book. Do you like green eggs and ham? Loquacious should go in be...

Re: ANEMOPHILOUS
Getting back to the love of wind, may I suggest that the previous post wishing to find a way to apply this one to politicians is a bit off the mark. Anemophilous means loving the wind, whereas it is generally the politicians who provide the wind. Anemophilous should be used to refer to the blowhard...

Re: ANEMOPHILOUS
I think the number of times zoophilous comes up, it is fairly unlikely to be confused with any other meaning in those contexts, so I think I'll stick with it! I was however moved to look up Wikipedia zoophilia entry to check whether there was any link (thanks for the zoosexual term MTC - new to me!)...
