Re: Picket

Related some way to "fit of pique"?
I'd say so. Piqué, too. And piquet, and pic, a special score of 30 in piquet. And Picard (Jean-Luc?). Wow, that's a pointy little root, isn't it? Stuck itself every which way.

Re: Tryst

I am regularly pleased to find something new when I re-read old messages. This word's origin never struck me before, but now... . Isn't it interesting that the Old French is now French and Spanish for "sad"? Probably unrelated etymologies, but still fun to think about. Misplaced trust can ...

Well, even editors miss things. It's one of those common errors, seeing what you expect to see. Very easy to do, sadly.

Re: Recruit

I can see non-natives and computers misunderstanding definition 2. As far as I know, one does not recruit a stamp collection. They are built, though. 3 could cause a similar problem. One just doesn't say things like, "I have to go recruit my supply of Christmas stamps for this year's mailing.&q...

Could we call drag shows a kind of mummery? They are over-the-top splashy dress performances, no?

Re: Deadline

If I understand correctly, line comes from Latin linum, which meant flax. As flax was turned into the thread to make cloth, it also meant linen and the thread to make it. That thread is the connecting thread to today's meaning of line.

Re: Punch

Ah, but is not this punch actually intentionally damaging? Punching the passenger's ticket so it can't be reused? As an additional thought, how did awl become almost strictly for leatherworking? It's a pointy punch, and we use both words, but they aren't interchangeable. While you may have a whole a...

Re: Chrysalis

With the upcoming 'cicadapocalypse', this is a timely word. I'd forgotten that the 'chrys' part is from the Greek for gold. A hint to Poe there? Not likely, but I felt like tossing that in.
