I was interested to see the suggested pronunciation for alternate
alternate [awl-têr-nêt].

The COD gives the one I am used to:
alternate /0ɔ:lˈtə:nət, ɒl-/ adjective, adverb, & noun.

A British alternative?

I am aware that this word has been looked at in the past, but maybe some newcomers would be interested. It's such a lovely word. It came to my mind yesterday while watching a baby grey/gray seal being cosseted/cosetted by the gentle flipper of its bulky mum.
