hypertrichosis

Postby Brazilian dude » Mon Sep 05, 2005 12:25 pm

Hypertrichosis is a medical term referring to a condition of excessive body hair. It can be generalized, symmetrically affecting most of the torso and limbs, or localized, affecting an area of skin. In most cases, the term is used to refer to an above-average amount of normal body hair that is unwanted.

I stumpled upon this interesting word this morning via Japanese. I was looking some other word up when I chanced on 多毛症 (tamoushou = ta [many/much], mou [hair(s)], shou [disease]). The translation (in Portuguese) was hipertricose. I tried hypertricosis (sic) in English and I was directed to hypertrichosis. Great find.

Yes it is an interesting word,it's funny though because only the other day I was reading a list that named all the phobias and came across 'tricophobia',upon reading this I began to wonder what relevance the prefix 'Trico' could possibly have to hair!!!! :)
