Spiv

Postby David Myer » Wed Apr 02, 2014 2:52 am

A lovely word, unlike any other I can think of in the sense that the words that rhyme with it, end with an 'e'. Most online resources point to it possibly being derived from spiffy. But that's pretty thin. Surely there is a better answer to its origins than that?

I haven't looked too deeply, but the connection between spiv and spiffy seem quite logical to me. One characteristic of spivs is that they tend to be snazzy dressers, even if they are petty criminals.
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.
