Wikipedia says they were supposed to be magpies. But they don't strongly resemble the North American magpie with the broadest range (the black-bill magpie, Pica hudsonia) because that species has a black bill and legs and a slimmer body. (I'll ignore the anthropomorphic hands in the cartoon birds.) The yellow-billed magpie (Pica nuttalli) is limited to California, which, perhaps significantly, is where the cartoons were created. Yellow-billed magpies have yellow bills, like the characters, but black feet, unlike the cartoon characters. And of course Heckle & Jeckle live the Hollywood lifestyle and put on some weight.

Most interesting, thanks for your research.
We don't have magpies around here, enough
other pests however. Sorry, they just seem
like they'd be a pest bird.
