eventide

Postby William Hupy » Fri May 29, 2015 10:53 am

This is a word you do not hear or read much anymore. Somehow the first part comes from older Germanic versions of the current German word for night: abend. Interesting, that tide also is related to the current German word for "time", that is, zeit, which, not surprisingly, comes from the PIE "di-ti" for division of time, and then, of course, from that humble PIE (get it, humble pie) root it spread to Sanskrit and Greek. So English speakers shake off the nefarious influence of the Latin side and get in touch with the German side of your language!

Anyone have a thought on how this one might be resurrected? How, forsooth, might we apply it?
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.
