And therein lies the real reason Americans insist on English being the one unifying language of the US, but hey, even paranoids have enimies and if someone is speaking in another language,looking at you and laughing, is there reason to believe they are talking about you and (gasp!) plotting your demise!

I'm a bit confused here regarding the grammar; although the concept is clear. How can a phrase be considered a noun?
