ta·bes·cent
PRONUNCIATION: t-bsnt
ADJECTIVE: Progressively wasting away.
ETYMOLOGY: Latin tbscns, tbscent-, present participle of tbscere, to waste away, inchoative of tbre, from tbs, a wasting away.

Sorry, but i couldn't get the Latin to show as it did on the original site.

Several other words have the scent ending, e.g. quiescent. It would be interesting to list them, and see what they have in common.

Doesn't the scent ending mean "state-of-being"?

Sheesh, instructive link, Gail. Cyclamate, Saccharin, then Aspartame? Don't three strikes make an out?
