Scriptorium

Postby Grogie » Thu Aug 31, 2006 5:28 pm

A room, as in a monastery, library, etc, etc, where manuscripts are stored, read or copied. One of the most famous ones, at least for lovers of the English language, is the one where James Murray and numerous assistants worked to create the first edition of the OED.

I think of the Library in the movie The Name of the Rose.

The Name of the Rose was the first Umberto Eco novel I read, followed by Foucault's Pendulum. The movie was OK, although it freaked out the relatives I convinced to watch it. (There were no pratfalls or fart jokes.)

You can examine a web-based scriptorium here or here. (No sabotage poisons, but I'd still recommend washing after touching the keyboard, before touching your mouth...)

Thanks for posting this word, Grogie.

Gail you continue to be full of surprises. Where do you come up with all of these links?
