DIPTYCH

Postby Bailey » Tue Sep 12, 2006 7:27 pm

You've heard of Trytichs right? well this is only two parts.
dip·tych (dptk)
n.
1. A work consisting of two painted or carved panels that are hinged together.
2. An ancient writing tablet having two leaves hinged together.
3. A list of names, originally contained on such a tablet, of living and dead Christians for whom special prayers are made during the liturgy in many eastern and western churches.

[Late Latin diptycha, from Greek diptukha, from neuter pl. of diptukhos, folded double : di-, two; see di-1 + ptukh, fold (from ptussein, ptukh-, to fold).]

Diptychs were commissioned for many Medieval to Renaissance altar pieces or other devotional artworks. The 14th c Wilton Diptych is probably one of the more recognizable. This link features 3D examples.

Here's an example of a 16th c ivory and brass diptych sundial.

Contemporary artists make good use of this technique, especially for large institutional or corporate spaces. It's a way to explore variations on a theme, regardless of style or media. Some multi-paneled Asian screens fall into the diptych and triptych categories.

This one is a perfect diptych these two people couldn't be farther apart[note the body language], except for him keeping his options open with his hand on her knee.
