Emergency

Postby skinem » Sun Oct 01, 2006 12:51 pm

Main Entry: emer·gen·cy
Pronunciation: i-'m&r-j&nt-sE
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural -cies
Usage: often attributive
1 : an unforeseen combination of circumstances or the resulting state that calls for immediate action
2 : an urgent need for assistance or relief <the governor declared a state of emergency after the flood>

Haven't found etymology of this word--I'm sure it's just that I don't know where to look.

I looked at http://www.etymonline.com, but it wasn't there. I'ld like to help, but I guess it isn't enough of an emergancy to supercede my other chores.

I found this
emerge
1563, from M.Fr. emerger, from L. emergere "rise out or up," from ex- "out" + mergere "to dip, sink" (see merge). The notion is of rising from a liquid by virtue of buoyancy. Emergency "unforeseen occurrence" is c.1631. Emergent (adj.) was first recorded c.1450.

I figure it's from emerge, with the connotation that adds the sudden/crises twist to it.
Perry I have lots of etymology links you might like.
