Limerence

Postby Grogie » Fri Oct 27, 2006 4:58 am

I discovered this interesting word today. It was coined by the American psychologist Dorothy Tennov in the 1970,s. She allegedly said that the word has no etymology. The word refers to an involuntary cognative or emotional state similar to infatuation(with another person) but without the desire for sexual activity. I saw the word at oed.com.

And I would have thought that it was an involuntary compulsion to author or recite limericks.

On a serious note, the word does not appear in the Online Etymology Dictionary.

Thanks Perry. I,ve read that the word appears in few, if any, regular dictionaries. It is a highly specialized word. An Internet search does reveal some information about it.
