Ruckle

To make a hoarse, rattling sound or to make wrinkles or creases into a smooth surface.

Thank you! I've heard the second definition of this word before, but, not the first.
A "death ruckle" just doesn't sound the same to me..

Is there an element of degree here? That is, what is more wrinkled, a ruckle, a wrinkle or a furrow?

A ruckle or a wrinkle? Crease, crinkle, fold or ruffle? I happen to possess all of these!

Personally, I'd have to say a furrow is the most extreme. A farmer has furrows in his fields. Furrows are big enough that they have their own wrinkles!

The American Heritage Dictionary gives this for ruck: NOUN: A crease or pucker, as in cloth

I looked for a relation to ruching and found this sorry definition:
NOUN: 1. Ruches considered as a group. 2. Fabric for ruches.

Onpedia says defines ruche as:
n. 1. A plaited, quilled, or goffered strip of lace, net, ribbon, or other material, - used in place of collars or cuffs, and as a trimming for women's dresses and bonnets
and ruckle as:
2. ruckle - make wrinkles or creases into a smooth surface; "The dress got wrinkled"

who wants ruckle and ruche to be cousins...

I wasn't thinking along those lines, but look at the sheepishexpression on Sluggo's avatar.
