Highfalutin

Postby skinem » Fri Jan 19, 2007 8:23 pm

high·fa·lu·tin

Variant(s): also hi·fa·lu·tin /"hI-f&-'lü-t&n/
Function: adjective
Etymology: perhaps from 2high + alteration of fluting, present participle of flute
1 : PRETENTIOUS, FANCY
2 : expressed in or marked by the use of high-flown bombastic language : POMPOUS

(With a nod to Perry, who's post about a flaunting flautist made me wonder if the flautist was also highfalutin.)

Seems to be some doubt about the etymology...

Thanks for the link, gailr!

I usually do a search before I submit a word, just to make sure I haven't forgotten we've talked about it or if it happened prior to me finding this site.

Must be gettin' sloppy (-ier)...
