EDUCATION

Postby katieoemail » Wed Aug 31, 2005 9:11 am

At this time of year we think a lot about education as students head back to school. Often we think of getting educated as being filled with knowledge but the word comes from educere (i think) which is to pull forth.
This implies that we have the knowledge within us and a teacher, or educator, is simply bringing it to our attention.
I thought that was interesting.

Yup, e-duc-ere means 'to draw out'. A duke (dux) was originally a battlefield leader: he led the troops out. So, thank you, Katie, for making me think of all those dukes of education preparing to take the strain: heave-ho!

... but the word comes from educere (i think) which is to pull forth. ...
And this reflexion of Platonic paedogogical philosophy has an even more direct descendent in English, as can be seen here....
