Provenance

Antique dealer in town showed a beautiful deacon's bench on Facebook. I asked her mother about its provenance, and she didn't know the word. I told her it's like the chain of evidence thing on TV. Was this bench made in a shop 10 years ago, or did it go back 150 years? In art the term points to authenticity. Many famous artists taught schools and had their disciples copy parts of painting, perhaps adding a touch or two by the master. It can be very difficult at times to distinguish between a genuine master and a copy. Of course some copies are worth a bundle too.

Nice word. It's got good Latin roots, too. Maybe the Dr. can toss in a reference to Caesar while he's at it.
