Grotesque

Reading a bio of Henry VIII, I found he decorated several of his castles with the popular grotesque style adopted from Italy. The author seems fairly sure the style originated from grotto paintings from caves below Rome and such. It seems to weave the ugly and mysterious with the every day.
Somewhere the word changed into the modern day usage of horribly mishapen. A good word to study, I think.
