Perhaps good for a two-fer. Here we have the idea of color and the mate to cry, with different roots.

There is the British expression "hue and cry" which seems to be also a formal legal expression as in "raise the hue and cry." i take it to mean sound the alarm vocally by shouting. What say you Britishers in the crowd?

Quite, though one would probably 'make hue and cry' rather than raise it, were one to witness a criminal offence.

"Hue and cry" was once a legal requirement in England. If something criminal was afoot, the good citizens were to "make hue and cry" in order to capture the miscreant.
