flimflam

Postby eberntson » Wed Sep 04, 2013 11:46 am

noun
1 [mass noun] nonsensical or insincere talk:
pseudo-intellectual flimflam

2a confidence trick:
flimflams perpetrated against us by our elected officials

Src: OED

I have always like this word, it gives a great sensation when spoken. Plus all the flimflam-man movies and other tricksters. It has a Norse origin apparently.
EBERNTSON
Fear less, hope more;
eat less, chew more;
whine less, breathe more;
talk less, say more,
and all good things will be yours.

Flimflam,
I'm in a jam!
Levee broke,
Like opening a dam
Log floats by
Like battering ram.
Lady rows by,
Thank you ma'am.
(with apologies to MTC)

Some flimflam men can be redeemed. Witness Professor Harold Hill in Meredith Willson's "The Music Man", arguably the second greatest Broadway Musical - after "South Pacific", which is surely number one.
It is dark at night, but the Sun will come up and then we can see.

I put My Fair Lady as number one, and my wife prefers Sound of Music. South Pacific is right up there though.
