pontiff
Julius Caesar was the pontifex maximus. If I recall my limited Latin correctly this means something on the order of "chief bridge maker". What a metaphor! A priest is a bridge maker to the Gods. Francis is the current bridge maker in a line that goes back almost 2200 years.
