satire
This word has a distinguished Latin origin. Any guesses on how it evolved from meaning a full dish to its current meaning? Any opinion on how this word is, if it is, different in meaning from lampoon?

Re: satire
So, one would write a satire on the workings of government, but a lampoon of the people in government.Satire often emphasizes the weakness more than the weak person, and usually implies moral judgment and corrective purpose.
Lampoon refers to a form of satire, often political or personal, characterized by the malice or virulence of its attack
