satire

Postby William Hupy » Thu Apr 03, 2014 3:01 pm

This word has a distinguished Latin origin. Any guesses on how it evolved from meaning a full dish to its current meaning? Any opinion on how this word is, if it is, different in meaning from lampoon?

Satire often emphasizes the weakness more than the weak person, and usually implies moral judgment and corrective purpose.
Lampoon refers to a form of satire, often political or personal, characterized by the malice or virulence of its attack
So, one would write a satire on the workings of government, but a lampoon of the people in government.

Perhaps a satyr stole the dish and made fun of it.

I thought it was the dish that ran away with the spoon.
