qualm
I have only seen and used this in the plural - qualms. It appears that this is one of those rare words in the English language that has an English origin! Imagine that!

Re: qualm
Good word. I wonder if all or most of our qu words are from O.E.? Quell and quench both are.
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.

Slava. I like your question about an OE link to qu words. I have not examined the issue further, but all of those Latin question words with "qu" became "w" in German and English? I wonder "quare" - why.
