reverie
This is from Old French, originally meaning revelry, raving, delirium. By some twist of the human spirit it has evolved to its present English meaning of being pleasantly lost in one's owns thoughts.

Re: reverie
Well, I can see how if you're in a delirium or raving you might be said to be lost in your own thoughts. It does seem to be the case that many words get tamed over the years, no?
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.
