placer

Postby William Hupy » Fri Apr 25, 2014 9:30 am

I was reading a Spanish phrase that contained this word: placer, meaning pleasure. I wondered if it was somehow related to placer mining where valuable minerals, like gold are separated out due to the density of the material. I think so. The PIE root for "please" is PLAKE, with the notion of calm and still water.

Apparently not. It seems that "placer" in the mining sense comes from the Spanish plaza, an open place. Ultimately from Latin platea, a courtyard or broad street.
