Look how and why circa and circumference and all of the other "circum" words are related.

At the Round Table, the knight who ate too much was named Sir Cumference. :lol:

As to circa itself, its meaning is quite the same as the English equivalent: on or about.

More general than equivalent or equal I should think. It means around or about or especially near something. Often abbreviated,if I'm weak on dates, I migh opine Columbus discovered America ca.1500.
