avaricious
This seems to be a newby to English, having arrived only about the 15th century from France, but it has ancient roots in the Latin: avaritia, with the same meaning.

Not limited to things monetary, either. Some world leaders, even to this day, demonstrate an avaricious lust for power.
I do like one synonym for avarice, though, as it doesn't sound all that bad at first glance: cupidity.
