Bowery

Postby Slava » Thu Sep 04, 2014 8:45 pm

Who would'a thunk it? The Bowery is a "cultivated" area? In its Dutch origins it doth seem to be. It is generally populated by boors, but that type of cultivator tends to be uncultivated. CF the South African Boer, too.

I believe the Bowery was the farm of Peter Stuyvesant.

Similar words are bower(a sheltered place), Bauer (German for farmer) and Bowers, a family name. Are any of you old enough to remember the movies about the Bowery Boys? I am.
