piezoelectric

Postby William Hupy » Tue Sep 30, 2014 2:45 pm

The first part of this word comes from the Greek "piesen" meaning to squeeze. So this word means electricity caused by squeezing or pressing. I just read an article in Newsweek involving researchers who are developing backpacks and other devices that take advantage of bodily movement to produce electricity so that soon whenever you take a vigorous 30 minute walk your cell phone will be charged!

We had a piezoelectric flashlight in my family. No need to worry about batteries dying with that one. Your hand, maybe, but not batteries.
