Curious about the term 'vice' as used in
vice-president or vice-admiral.

Interesting word. 4 actually, though one of them I would call a misspelling of vise. I'd completely forgotten about the 2-syllable pronunciation, too. The other two have different roots.

The self is famous for two syllable pronunciations, making one vowel into a diphthong. But for the life of me, I don't remember ever hearing vice or vise pronounced with two syllables.
