priapic

Postby William Hupy » Mon Oct 06, 2014 3:25 pm

Will I become shunned for submitting this word? It was contained in an article I was reading. It referred to the masculinity of a certain rock star as "a selfish, priapic rock star".

Meaning, I suppose, that he thinks of himself as a stud. Technically, Priapus is a medical condition, named for one of those ubiquitous Greek gods. Scholars sometimes amuse themselves by using the term in relation to various stelae and such like.

Shunned? Nah. It is, after all, a very good and valid word. After all, Priapus was the god of fertility in Greek. However, if you are looking for something the Dr. will use, this is not one I'd think would pass muster. Remember, the word list goes out to a lot of other people, not just the half-dozen or so that comment here. Families with children, especially. And a lot of parents would not take kindly to seeing such words come across the kiddies' screens. Not that it's a "bad" word, just one that doesn't fit the pattern of the alphaAgoran theme.

Well put, Slava.
It is dark at night, but the Sun will come up and then we can see.
