whittle
One would think that this humble word found its origin in some rural storefront with the boys sittin' around with nothing better to do. In truth it has an ancient past with PIE roots from when our ancestors thousands of years ago were sittin' around a cave with nothing better to do.

Re: whittle
As a would be fiction writer, I depend heavily on my experiences on the "spit and whittle bench" of my boyhood. Hang around them thar fellers and you git a reel good eddiecashun. I would recommend Pascal Murray's spit and whittle bench that was the length of his four chair barber shop in Three Rivers, Texas, but alas, it is no more. I learned more there than at the University.
Does anyone out there read Sharyn McCrumb? I guess she was a militant feminist from birth, or else she is a man pretending to be a lady. She writes like she has been sitting on a spit and whittle bench for a long time. You may want to read some of her books, especially her short stories.

It is dark at night, but the Sun will come up and then we can see.
