Esurient

Postby Slava » Tue Nov 11, 2014 11:10 am

A nice rare word, just for fun. It means to be hungry, or even greedily voracious.
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.

Isn't there a Jack London story about a starving man that is rescued from a ship wreck, and they have to begin feeding him very slowly for a few days to reactivate his appetite? I think they used this word in that they want to negate the typical esurient nature of the starved person for their own good. if you just feed them anything they will get violently sick.

I also, heard the word in a story about the Vikings in North America meeting the Eskimos and feeding them milk, which the Inuit drank in a esurient manner, but then got very sick, and they attacked the Vikings the next day for trying to poison them.
