catacombs

Postby William Hupy » Fri Jan 02, 2015 10:46 am

Any thoughts on the origin of this word? The closest I can get is from Latin cata tumbas, for "among tombs". Or maybe the Latin cumbere for "to lie".

Don't really know, but the church association is always the catacombs of Rome that have Christian grafiti, such as the sign of the fish.

Churches occasionally will feature a "Catacombs Service" during which those attending are asked to imagine themselves as a persecuted group meeting below Rome. There are various twists from there, but it is usually intended as a highly participatory and unplanned service.

We once planned such a service, and I guess my dictation wasn't very clear. Even though her name was not Siri, the bulletin blazed forth in bold black type: Calico Combs Service Tonight!
