From "docere" in Latin, to teach. Docere also gave us doctor, not in the healing sense, but in the professor teaching sense. Most Europena languages use a different word to describe a healer:arzt, for instance in German.

Here in the States I've always heard this one as an exalted kind of tour guide in museums.
In Russia it's used for a kind of Assistant Professor.
