touted
This word started as jargon for thieves, with the meaning of "to be on the lookout". Then it morphed into look for votes, customers, jobs, etc. Naturally, when a person does this he may have to highly praise someone and thus its progression into the word we know today. Interesting, that even before it became a word familiar to thieves, it evolved from proto Germanic to Old English to Middle English as a word for a projection.

Re: touted
I gather that in British slang a tout is what American types would call a scalper.
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.

Re: touted
I mostly hear it as a vrb meaning to promote or sell something. "I don't know what kind of panacea he's touting this days, but he's at it again!"mseems like I've heard the word applied to certain circus personnel...may elephant tenders?
