I find this word, which implies a trace that lingers on after something is gone, quite evocative. "The box of perfumed love letters brought a wistful smile and a vestige of joy to the aged widower." I also associate this word with a favourite poem http://www.all-creatures.org/poetry/vestigia.html
Of course, the connotation need not be so pleasant. "Ally Monie left her third husband Ty Kuhn with only a vestige of his former wealth".
