prolegomena

Postby eberntson » Mon Mar 09, 2015 11:41 pm

A critical or discursive introduction to a text.

I got Dame Edna's Bedside Companion book and it has a "Prolegomena by Beverley Nichols" instead of a Preface. Mr. Nichols is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. Sorry I missed him, at least we still have Dame Edna.

In theology the word immediately calls to mind Karl Barth's "Prolegomena to Church Dogmatics." That prolegomena covers four volumes, divided into 12 sections of 5-700 pp apiece! Most theologs would call the work a systematic theology. Heaven forfend his get past the intro and finish the whole thing!

Any thoughts on why it's used in the plural?
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.

If you mean Barth's work, it sure isn't singular in any sense.

Immanuel Kant wrote a "Prolegomena to Any Future Metaphysics", if the prolegomena has more then one subject it examine there is no reason it shouldn't be plural.
