surreal
This word is nominated by me as just another example of a growing tendency to the extreme and overused. In the past something that was mildly unfathomable has now become surreal. Another is melodramatic. It seems to have evolved into meaning overly dramatic, where it originally meant a stage play accompanied by music, from the Greek "melos" for song.

Re: surreal
If we're going for overused, I'd like to proffer "unprecedented." I am SO tired of seeing this one.
