homestead

I was curious about the second syllable in this compound word: stead. It means "place". Old German "stadt" means town and still does. The PIE is "steti" to stand. Besides "bedstead" is this used in any other compound words you are able to think of?

Instead.
Farmstead.
Steady.
Steadfast.
Etc.
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.
