I'm not going to pretend it is likely to be mainstream but it could be used outside of computer science or maths. An idempotent operation can be repeated an arbitrary number of times and the result will be the same as if it had been done only once.
Erm, how about 'You don't need to keep pressing the button to call the elevator, Johnny, it's an idempotent operation.' At least it might distract the little blighter.
