tepid

Postby William Hupy » Tue May 19, 2015 10:09 am

There is a reason the ancient Romans called the lukewarm pool of their baths the tepidarium (the remaining two being frigidarium and caldarium). The PIE root is *tep which made its way across two continents, affecting Sanskrit ("tapati" makes warm) and Welsh ("tes" for heat).

I took a look on the Internot to look this up and discovered that there is also a word "subtepid." Wouldn't that just be a really pushing it attempt at a synonym for "cold"?
