sordid

Postby William Hupy » Wed May 20, 2015 10:11 am

From Latin "sordidus", from PIE "swrd", meaning black, dirty and then it morphed into foul, low, mean. It seems to be frequently coupled with details, as in "give me the sordid details".

"Sordid details" diminishes the meaning, even though commonly used. Something sordid is evil, wallowing in a pig trough of wickedness.

If "sordid details" diminishes the meaning, what would you have instead? "Give me all the sordidness?" Or, to coin a new one, sordidity?

An extra tie-in here is that sordid is related to swarthy.
