recoil
Difficult to fathom that this word is from Latin "reculare", with "re" meaning "back" and "culus" meaning "backside, bottom, fundament".

Re: recoil
Why so difficult? All of its meanings are to move toward the back. What's more back than the butt?
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.

Re: recoil
Difficult, as it seems to have a Germanic upbringing and not Latin. It seems more blue collar than white. I heard this recently regarding that dichotomy: There are people who shower before they go to work and then there are those who shower after work, meaning blue collar after and white collar before. I retire in 29 days from an office where I dealt with a third group - those who did not shower!
