I ran across this word in a crossword puzzle as a definition or synonym of oscillate. I thought at first that it was a mistake and that they had meant for the answer to be vibrate, but upon digging a little deeper I discovered that it is indeed a valid answer. I thought it was odd enough that I should post it...

Nice word ! I get the impression of pans of a balance scale (Latin libra, the kind the blind-folded goddess of Justice - whatever happened to her ! - was usually pictured as holding up in one arm) rocking more and more slowly until it finally settles with the pointer on the indicator giving the weight (mass) of whatever it was that had been placed on them.
