Ax or ask?

Postby Perry Lassiter » Fri Feb 07, 2014 6:44 pm

Shakespeare, Chaucer, and the Coverdale Bible all used "ax" or "axe" for "ask." We think using "ax" is low culture, but ck out this article from the Smithsonian:

You beat me to it. I had come across the NPR piece and meant to post it a while ago. Here it is:

While I understand the reasoning, I must admit I can't readily accept the hatchet job on the regular pronunciation. I'm not an ask murderer.
Life is like playing chess with chessmen who each have thoughts and feelings and motives of their own.
