Kill

Postby Slava » Fri Aug 29, 2008 7:34 pm

Driving through NY this summer I noticed quite a few of these, so I thought the word might be nice to peruse.

kill [ kil ] (plural kills)

noun
Definition:
regional waterway: a stream, channel, or waterway
[Mid-17th century. < Dutch kil "channel"]

Regional History

The term kill meaning "waterway" endures today mainly in place names in New York State (Catskill and Peekskill) and New Jersey (Paulins Kill).

I never stopped to think about those place names before. Very cool.

Also the vacationally-discouraging Fishkill, NY.

And southward into Pennsylvania, the Schuylkill (school-kill) River (Philadelphia runs through it).

The parallel auto expressway is colloquially called the SureKill Distressway.
