Leaves, grass, tree bark etc,etc left by hikers, walkers etc,etc on a trail or path chosen in order to indicate the course taken to those following at some distance. ''To get to the cabin we followed the patrin put down by our partners.''

I forgot to add that the word can be spelled ''patteran'' also.
